Global University students are creative in ministry applications of their courses. Who would have thought of portraying King David of Israel from the course on Old Testament Literature as “Davey the Outlaw” in a drama? Garrett Edgerton, a new student with Global University, produced a six-part drama based on David’s life and presented it to a group of “at risk” inner city boys and girls in New Jersey. The youths’ ages ranged from 7 to 14.
Garrett was inspired to write the drama as a ministry application for his Old Testament course. He wrote, directed, and acted in the drama. He chose the biblical account of David’s flight into the wilderness from King Saul. The drama portrayed David’s trust in God, his mercy towards Saul by sparing his life, and his consistency in honoring God and King Saul as God’s anointed.
The drama wasn’t an overnight project that could be handed in the next day. Garrett spent more than 100 hours writing it. David was portrayed as “Davey the outlaw” who killed Goliath, the “big bad man.” King Saul was the jealous “sheriff” who chased Davey out of town. The drama concludes with Davey’s returning to Israel to be the duly elected sheriff because of his steadfast faith in God and his consistency in acting justly.
Garrett assumed the responsibility of directing the drama. He worked with his team for 15 hours to prepare for the presentation. He worked another six hours as part of the cast in performing and facilitating the drama.
What were the results? One hundred young people responded by making a lifelong decision to follow Christ. Garrett’s time, talent, and energy investment produced many souls for the kingdom of God. Global is proud to have students like Garrett studying worldwide.
Global’s mission “to win the lost and train the found” is taking place with students like Garrett every day throughout the world.
