Paul’s journey through the ancient land of Macedonia was a mission that helped shape his theology and his life as a Christian. By retracing these steps while studying Paul’s theology, students will gain a deeper understanding of what churches in the region experienced during Paul’s visit. The course A Macedonia Mission: The Shaping of Pauline Theology will be led by Dr. James Hernando, an eminent New Testament scholar in the Assemblies of God. Students will be immersed in Paul’s surroundings as they work through theological literature, encounter Paul’s epistles to the Philippians and Thessalonians, and trace passages in Acts. Upon the successful completion of required coursework, students will earn three graduate credits.
Students who embark on this academic adventure will travel from Chicago to Thessaloniki on September 9 and jump right into Paul’s journey. The first five nights will be spent in modern-day Kavala, or the ancient port of Neapolis in Acts. While in Kavala, students will learn and worship in local churches and follow the route of the ancient Roman road on the way to Philippi. Students will encounter the experiences of Paul in the ancient amphitheater, city center, and river site of Lydia’s prayer group.
The remaining four days will be spent in Thessaloniki. Students will visit the ruins of ancient Berea and other local historical sites. Once again, there will be an opportunity to worship with Greek Pentecostal believers in the Thessaloniki area. On September 19, after nine full days of intense learning, students will return to Chicago from Thessaloniki.
The total cost for the trip is $3,300. This price includes roundtrip flights from Chicago to Thessaloniki, hotels, ground transportation, site admission fees, course tuition, and two meals per day while in Greece. A $300 non-refundable deposit is required to secure your place. A subsequent payment of $1,500 will be due by May 1, with the remaining amount of $1,500 due by July 1. The flight itinerary from Chicago to Thessaloniki, as well as a full course syllabus, will be provided upon receiving your deposit.
Please note that you are responsible for your own flight to Chicago, required textbooks for the course, one meal per day while in Greece, and any additional items or souvenirs you wish to bring back.
