How to Start a Career in Christian Ministry

In its basic sense, a ministry career is a position within a Christian church or organization. However, for many, it’s much more than that. A ministry career begins with a calling felt within that drives individuals to serve in an organization that reflects their values and beliefs. To follow this calling, one must determine which ministerial path is right for him or her.

3 Levels of Ministry

Within the Assembles of God, there are three levels of ministry with leadership positions that need to be filled. Each position allows for unique leadership opportunities and responsibilities.

Certified Minister

A certified minister is the lowest credentialed status for ministers. This level is recommended for individuals who are looking to assist in gospel work and are willing to devote a portion of their time to Christian service. They will remain under the supervision of higher-level ministers such as pastors or a designated supervisor.

Note that Global University does not offer certifications for ministers; however, we will equip you with the knowledge and academic requirements to apply for certified minister status with the US General Council of the Assemblies of God.

Licensed Minister

Licensed ministers have clear evidence of a divine calling and are willing to commit their lives in service of that calling. Although specifications vary among denominations, generally, a ministerial license may expire within an assigned time period, whereas ordained ministers are permanent members of the clergy.

The roles of licensed ministers may vary from church to church, but generally include the following:

  • Conducting worship ceremonies
  • Providing pastoral care to those within the congregation

In addition, depending on state laws, some licensed ministers may be allowed to officiate at wedding ceremonies

Ordained Minister

Ordination is the highest level of certification within the Assemblies of God. Ordained ministers have provided proof of their call and are willing to commit to full-time ministry within the church. Applicants must be over 23 years old, currently hold a lower-level ministerial license, and prove full-time ministry for two consecutive years before ordination.

Ordained ministers are permitted to perform all responsibilities of certified and licensed ministers, as well as the following:

  • Perform baptisms within the church
  • Officiate wedding ceremonies
  • Conduct funeral ceremonies
